Assistant Director of Music, St Mary’s, Putney

St Mary’s, Putney, seeks an Assistant Director of Music to work with our Director of Music to develop and enrich the musical life of the church. The salary will be up to £4,700, depending on experience.

Appointment subject to safer recruitment including an enhanced DBS clearance and references.

The successful candidate will:

  • Be an accomplished organist and musician, able to manage to a professional standard the excellent two manual Marcussen organ.
  • Be familiar with traditional choral music and liturgy in order to accompany services and the well-established SATB choir
  • Be expected to work 2-3 Sunday services a month (10am and/or 6pm) and other occasional meetings listed below.

Desirable:

  • a skilled pianist
  • a knowledge of appropriate repertoire for younger voices
  • teaching experience in order to support the Director of Music in the development of children’s and youth choirs

Specific areas of commitment and responsibility: 

  • Weekly Sunday services: From 0900-11.30 on Sunday morning (2-3 services a month) and/or for Caritas on Sunday evening (without choir, from 6pm until 7pm; occasionally with choir from 4.30pm)
  • Regular accompanying of the Adult choir in sung services
  • Occasional Tuesday evening choir rehearsals – Junior and/or Adult Choir (in discussion with the Director of Music)
  • An occasional music meeting (once every two months) with the Director of Music and the Parish Priest, to discuss hymns and look at the Calendar ahead.
  • Planning meetings with the Director of Music – a larger meeting quarterly, and working on a regular basis in between these larger meetings.

Additional information:

  • The organ is available for rehearsal and teaching purposes. Designated practice slots are already reserved, however the church building is very busy and any bookings for teaching and private practice should be arranged in consultation with the Premises Manager
  • Supporting the Director of Music in recruitment drives for the choirs
  • Supporting the Director of Music in taking the lead on renewal of the Sunday recital series and developing new festival ideas
  • Maintaining and strengthening links with the Music department of All Saints’ Church, Putney and other surrounding parishes
