Admission to Communion
In the Parish of Putney, we take the spirituality of children seriously, and we want to give them opportunities to grow in their relationship with God and take their place as full members of our worshipping community. One way that children can enter more fully into our worship is by starting to receive communion, which can happen after a short course of preparation.
We run the course for children in Year 3 and above.
The ABC (Admission of the Baptised to Communion) preparation course consists of 5 sessions. The first session is an information and preparation session for parents / guardians, intended both for those families whose children have decided to take the course, and for those who would like to know more. The other sessions cover: Baptism and Belonging; The Christian Way; The Last Supper; and Holy Communion.
This first date, an Introductory Session for parents, will be on Sunday 24th November 2024 at 4-5pm @ St Mary’s Church.
The main sessions take place in 2025 on the following dates at 4.00-5.30pm on:
Sunday 12th January @ St Mary’s Church
Sunday 19th January @ All Saints’ Church
Sunday 26th January @ St Mary’s Church
Saturday 1st February @ @ St Mary’s Church @ 4-5.30pm and All Saints’ Church @ 11am-12.15pm (venue determined by where your child will be admitted to communion – see below)
The course ends with the Admission Service on Sunday 2nd February. The Admission Services will be held in both churches so that the children can be welcomed by their church family into the worshipping community to which they feel most connected. The services will take place at:
- 10am at St Mary’s Church
- 10.30am at All Saints’ Church
Faith is nurtured in the home, and so we ask parents or guardians to attend the course as well, sometimes joining in activities with the children, and sometimes taking part in separate discussions. This will enable you to support your child as they are admitted to communion and might also help you to think through some of your own questions about faith.
If your child is in Year 3 or over and is looking to take the next step in their journey of faith, you are warmly invited to bring them to our communion preparation course.
